SEGRE, BENIAMINO
SEGRE, BENIAMINO (1903–1977), Italian mathematician. Segre was professor of mathematics at Bologna University until he was dismissed in 1938 under the Fascist anti-Jewish laws. He was then invited to England by the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning and spent the years until 1946 at the Universities of London, Cambridge, and Manchester. He returned to his chair at Bologna in 1946 and moved to Rome in 1950. He was elected president of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in 1968. Segre made important contributions to geometry. His books include Non-singular Cubic Surfaces (1942) and Arithmetical Questions on Algebraic Varieties (1951).
